                   June 7.- Muster-in roll of Captain Lewis Brooks' Company (C),
                   in the Fourteenth Regiment (Second Brigade) of Indiana Foot
                   Volunteers, commanded by Colonel Nathan Kimball, called into
                   service of the United States by the President from June 7, 1861
                   (date of this muster) for the term of three years, unless sooner
                   discharged..

                    Stationed at Huttonsville, [west] Virginia, September-October
                    1861.
         
                    Stationed at Camp Keyes, Romney, [west] Virginia, November-
                    December 1861.
         
                    Stationed at Camp Chase, Paw Paw, [west] Virginia, January-
                    February 1862.
                    Stationed at Moore's Farm, Virginia, March-April 1862.
                    March 5-6.- Left Paw Paw, flyest] Virginia for Martinsburg,
                    Virginia, where we arrived March 6, a distance of fifty-three
                    miles.
                    March 11-12.- Marched from Martinsburg to Winchester, Vir-
                    ginia, distance twenty-two miles.
                    March 18-20.- Marched with the regiment in pursuit of the
                    enemy from Winchester. to Strasburg, Virginia and return
                    marched, distance thirty-five miles.
                    March 22.- The company was on picket and was attacked by the
                    enemy's cavalry.
                    March 26.- The company was engaged with the regiment in the
                    battle of Winchester, Virginia.   Lost two men wounded.
                    Marched in pursuit of the enemy to Strasburg, Virginia, a dis-
                    tance of eighteen miles.
                    April 1.- Marched from Strasburg to camp near Edenburg, Vir-
                    ginia. Distance, eighteen miles.
                    April 13.- Left Edenhurg, Virginia and marched to New Mar-
                    ket, Virginia via Columbia Furnace, distance twenty-seven miles.
                    April 25.- Advanced five miles south of New Market.
                    April 27- Advanced five miles further on the road towards Mar-
                    risonburg, Virginia.
         
                    Stationed at Alexandria, Virginia, May-June 1862.
                    May 12-22.- Started from New Market, Virginia to Fredericks-
                    burg and marched via Luray, Front Royal, Warrenton, and
                    Catlett's Station and arrived at Fredericksburg May 22. Distance
                    marched 131 miles.
                    May' 26.- Left Fredericksburg and marched via Catlett's Station,
                    Manassas Junction, Thoroughfare Gap, Rectortown, Manassas
                    Gap to Front Royal, distance about ninety-five miles.
                    June 2-4.- Marched towards Luray. Arrived June 4 and after
                    changing camp several times, were marched to relief of Colonel
                    Carroll and General Tyler's forces at Port Republic.
                    June 10.- Met their retiring forces and Kimball's Brigade cov-
                    ered their retreat. Distance marched about forty~ight miles.
                    June 23.- Marched to Luray, Front Royal, Salem, and White
                    Plains to Bristoe Station, where we arrived June 23.  Distance
                    about ninety-three miles.
                    June 29.- Took cars to Alexandria.  Arrived the same day.
                    Distance by railroad, twenty-seven miles. Distance marched 367
                    miles. Total, 394 [miles].
                    Station not stated, July-August 1862.
         
                    Stationed at Loudoun Valley, September-October 1862.

                    September 17.- In the battle of Antietam our company lost in
                    killed, three noncommissioned officers and two privates.
         
                    Stationed near Falmouth, Virginia, November-December 1862.
                    November 1-9.- The company marched with the regiment via
                    Rectortown, Piedmont, Salem to Warrenton, Virginia, where we
                    arrived November 9.
                    November 13.- Left Warrenton and marched within a few miles
                    of Falmouth, Virginia.
                    December 11.- Remained until December 11. Marched to the
                    Rappahannock River.
                    December 12-13.- Crossed and took an active part in the
                    engagement of December 13, in which we lost two privates
                    killed; a captain, a second lieutenant, two noncommissioned offi-
                    cers, and five privates wounded; and three privates missing, sup-
                    posed to be killed.
                    December 14-15.- On the night of December 14 evacuated the
                    city of Fredericksburg, Virginia and on December 15 returned to
                    our old camp.
         
                    Stationed at Falmouth, Virginia, Januay-February 1863.
         
                    Stationed at United States Ford, Virginia, March-April 1863.
         
                    Stationed at Falmouth, Virginia, April 10, 1863.
         
                    Stationed at Uniontown, Maryland, May-June 1863.

                    June 20.- Muster-out roll of Captain Samuel Nicholas', late
                    Captain [Hugh F.] Hopkins, late Captain [William] Houghton,
                    late Captain [Lewis] Brooks', Company (C), in the Fourteenth
                    Regiment of Indiana Foot Volunteers, commanded by Lieutenant-
                    Colonel B. H. C. Cavins, late John Coons, late Colonel William
                    Harrow, late Colonel Nathan Kimball, called into the service of
                    the United States by the President at Terre Haute, indiana (the
                    place of general rendezvous) on June 7, 1861 to serve for the
                    term of three years from the date of enrollment, unless sooner
                    discharged, from June 7, 1861 (when mustered in) to June -,
                    1864 The company was organized by Captain Lewis Brooks at
                    Loogootee, Indiana in the month of April 1861 and marched
                    thence to Terre Haute, where it arrived May 10, a distance of
                    sixty-five miles.
