Guidelines

The information found on these rolls of film is limited to: wills, court orders, original marriage bonds, consent notes, tax assessors' lists, ministers' returns, marriage certificates and licenses, property deeds. Marriage licenses and property deeds each have an index. At this time there are no Hardin County birth records stored here for any year.

The following is offered simply as a guideline to assist your search for genealogical information. Please keep in mind that all records are hand written and although some may be difficult to read, are the best copies available.

The actual titles on the microfilm boxes (with definitions) are as follows.

  1. COURT ORDERS - These rolls of microfilm* contain transcripts of the daily circuit court activities. The court order books ate in' chronological order and indexes to the court orders are in alphabetical order by last name. The page number of the ledger where the court case is listed follows the name [1793-1875]

  2. CRIMINAL COURT CASES - Indexes to these records are arranged alphabetically by last name of the plaintiff [1881-1977]

  3. CIVIL COURT CASES - An assortment of duties were performed by the local circuit court. Constables were appointed. Orders to repossess personal property to pay debts are issued. The court could order an individual to be the overseer of a road to insure that it was properly maintained. Guardians were appointed for orphaned children under the age of fourteen [1876-1977]

*More than one book of court cases is on each roll of microfilm. The index for each book is at the beginning of that book. In some instances the reason for the court appearance is also noted.

  4. INDEX TO PROPERTY DEEDS - lists the year date, names of the seller and the buyer (alphabetically by last name), which DEED BOOK the transaction is recorded in (book, letter or number), and the page number the document is written on (page number is listed in the column marked 'folio').

  5. PROPERTY DEEDS - Copies of the original written record of the transactions concerning sale and purchase of properties in Hardin County. INDEX TO PROPERTY DEEDS should be consulted first for page number. Deeds are recorded for years [1793-1876]

  6. TAX ASSESSOR'S LIST - This is a listing of possessions per household and the value designated for each. A tax of (xx) cents per $ 100 in value was assessed.
